Moving Season Has Begun – PCS Resources Part 2

You’ve come down on orders to PCS (Permanent Change of Station) and don’t know where to begin. Even if you’ve moved before, every move is different — circumstances change, different duty stations have different housing situations. Having some decent resources can help make things go more smoothly, especially if they let you take care of a few things even before arriving at your new duty station.

1. militarybyowner.com

militarybyowner.com

militarybyowner.com is brilliant as far as I’m concerned — it lets you search for off-post housing (buy or rent) according to proximity to military base. So even if you don’t know the names of all the areas around a base for off-post housing searches, you can still search easily. And if you have a house that you want to sell or rent out (and it’s near a base), you can list your property on the site for a fee.

2. PCS-Lodging.com

PCS-Lodging.com is also a useful site andalso lets you search by base for military lodging so you know what temporary lodging is available during that transitional time between arriving at a new duty station and moving into your housing. Off-post lodging options are also listed.

Moving Season Has Begun – PCS Resources

Moving DayPCS (Permanent Change of Station) season is here. The moving trucks have been showing up in my neighborhood already.

Whether you dread leaving or can’t wait to get out of dodge, the move itself can be a hassle and a lot of work. There are a million things to remember to do, to turn off, transfer, sort, giveaway, throw away, sell, and pack. Make sure the car’s oil has been changed and is ready for the long drive. Or drive the car to a port or railhead for transport. Flights to arrange. Housing and school wait lists to sign up for. It goes on and on.

Plan My Move

To help make sense of it all, MilitaryOneSource has an online tool available called Plan My Move. Input your old home station and your new home station and some other pieces of info, and it will give you info on your entitlements and benefits (i.e. $$$), checklists, points of contact and more.
